A BEGINNERS’ jogging group for adults new to running has helped more than 30 people complete their first 5km race – after just four months of training!

The group was started in January to encourage adults who had never run before.

Around 30 group members took part in their first 5km run at Corby on Sunday April 27 as part of the Northamptonshire 5km Run Series. For most of them, this was the first time they had participated in a running event.

They have been trained by two qualified leaders, Tracey Shepherd and Corrine Wilson, and now have the running bug! They all hope to enter the next race in the series, on Monday May 19 at Weekley Wood, Kettering, starting from The Harvester at 7.30pm.

The jogging group is part of Northamptonshire Sport’s ‘Jog Northants’ a countywide programme, which is part of ‘Run England’ (a national programme supported by England Athletics). Jog Northants and Run England aims to encourage people to become more active and fitter by running on a regular basis with people of similar fitness levels. The sessions were completely free of charge to try and encourage as many adults as possible to give it a go.

Tracey Shepherd, volunteer group leader, said: “We were very pleased to have so many of our runners join us for the Corby 5k which we enjoyed very much. There were some very good performances from our group, considering this was one of their very first 5k runs. It is an absolute pleasure to be able to work with beginner runners.”
